The Tom Collins
Daylight Tonight
David Eduardo
Monday, August 29, 2005

Gentlemen, Daylight Tonight (Terminus) is the record you dreamed of making as pimple faced kids playing air guitar in the mirror while singing into your microphone combs. Ladies, these are the songs that make you want to sleep with the guitar player, and if he’s out of your league you’ll shag the drummer or, as a last resort, strikeout with the bassist. All of you—prepare to feather your hair and strut, this album is the defibrillator resurrecting rock-n-roll’s cooling cadaver.

At the risk of letting my used car salesman persona shine—you won’t find a lemon on the lot. G’head and kick the tires on the unassuming, and (out of character) acoustic number “Why Don’t You Leave” before an incendiary electric lick introduces the thunderous anthem “That Town You Love.” Just etch yer John Hancock on the dotted line and drive away satisfied with a shit eatin’ grin. While the foundation is clearly classic, songs like “Back of Your Mind” and “Last Mistake” don’t get bogged down in nostalgia, instead they’re delivered with a familiar freshness that’s equal parts, party at the moon tower and roll of quarters at your favorite juke joint.

If your Case Logic, (iPod) has compact disks (downloads) by torchbearers like Black Keys, Drive-By Truckers, Kings of Leon, and Led Zeppelin then it’s recommended you pirate these songs immediately, or better yet, for an old-fashioned, feel-good sensation—smash the piggy bank and buy the record, get the guitar out of hock, learn the tabs, start a band—then owe it all to The Tom Collins.
